Review of the Pioneer DJ DDJ-REV1 2-Deck Serato DJ Controller
The Pioneer DJ DDJ-REV1 is a notable addition to the world of DJ controllers, specifically designed for those who crave a battle-style setup. With its compact dimensions of 10 x 21 x 2 inches and a weight of just 5 pounds, it is easy to transport while still delivering a robust performance. Launched on December 28, 2021, this controller is geared towards both beginners and seasoned DJs alike, offering a plethora of features that enhance the mixing experience. Let’s dive into the details of what makes the DDJ-REV1 a compelling choice for DJs around the globe.
Design and Build Quality
Sturdy Construction
The DDJ-REV1 boasts a solid build quality that sets it apart from many other controllers in its class. Users have praised its heavy, professional feel, a combination of high-quality plastic and brushed aluminum that encompasses the jog wheel sections. Unlike many plastic controllers, this one gives a sense of durability and professionalism, which is crucial for mobile DJs who need reliable gear.
Ergonomic Layout
The layout of the DDJ-REV1 has been specifically designed for battle-style mixing, making it intuitive for DJs familiar with traditional setups. The large jog wheels are responsive, providing a tactile experience that is essential for scratching and beat matching. The placement of knobs and faders allows for easy access, ensuring that DJs can focus on their performance rather than fidgeting with the setup.
Performance
Superior Sound Quality
When it comes to sound, users have reported that the DDJ-REV1 significantly outperforms its predecessors and competitors. Compared to older models like the DJM 450 and CDJ 800 MK2, the audio quality is described as “awesome,” with many noting that the mixer sounds, feels, and performs better than these established units. This is a crucial factor for professionals who demand the best from their equipment.
Versatile Features
The controller includes a built-in microphone input and offers a range of effects and EQ settings that allow DJs to craft their sound on the fly. The ability to deeply customize features through Rekordbox is a significant advantage, making it easier to tailor the setup to individual mixing styles. Users can adjust various settings, change FX colors, and program effects buttons for quick access during live performances.
Plug-and-Play Convenience
The DDJ-REV1 is designed for easy setup; it is plug-and-play compatible with Serato DJ and Rekordbox, making it accessible for users of varying technical skill levels. Many users have reported a smooth installation process on Windows, although Mac users should take care to follow specific instructions for optimal performance.
User Experience
Ideal for Beginners and Pros
The DDJ-REV1 has been well-received by both novice and experienced DJs. Beginners appreciate the straightforward setup and user-friendly design, while seasoned professionals enjoy the controller’s advanced features. One user noted that this controller feels like a realistic alternative to turntables, making it an excellent choice for those looking to learn scratching techniques.
Learning Curve and Versatility
While the DDJ-REV1 is particularly suited for hip-hop and scratching, some users have mentioned that it may feel a bit limited for electronic music DJs. However, this doesn’t detract from its overall performance. For those who want to explore different genres, the included features and flexible controls enable a wide range of mixing styles.
Potential Drawbacks
Touch Capacitance Issues
Some users have reported issues with jog wheel touch capacitance after a few months of use, which could be a concern for long-term reliability. While this may not be a prevalent issue for everyone, it’s worth noting for potential buyers to weigh the pros and cons before making a purchase.
Not Ideal for Every Genre
While the controller excels in certain genres, DJs focusing on electronic music might find some limitations compared to more versatile setups. For those who strictly mix electronic tracks, exploring other models could be beneficial.

I’ve been deejaying since the early 90s, so I consider myself an old-school DJ. Transitioning from Technics 1200s to the Serato box was a remarkable technological leap, allowing mobile DJs to carry thousands of songs so easily. Now, regarding this particular controller, it’s incredibly easy to set up and lightweight. The Rekordbox software downloaded smoothly, but Mac users should take care—following the online installation instructions is crucial for proper setup. Windows PC users, on the other hand, experienced no glitches; it worked perfectly right after installation.
This controller boasts numerous impressive features, but I’ll just mention a few that I really appreciate. First, the ability to have eight effect buttons that I can program and use instantly is fantastic. The crossfaders, buttons, and knobs all feel great during use, and there are plenty of output options, including RCA, XLR, and booth 1/4″ outputs.
Now, for my only downside: it doesn’t support Serato, which I was aware of before purchasing. I assumed that, given Pioneer’s long-standing presence in the DJ industry, their software would be comparable to Serato. While Rekordbox is functional, it simply isn’t for me. Ultimately, I don’t expect to use this controller much. Instead, I will be purchasing the Pioneer DJ DDJ-SR2 for the majority of my mobile gigs.
Produto muito bom de Alta qualidade aprovado –
I decided to invest in this controller during a great sale, and I’m really glad I did. It’s as professional as you can get without having to use turntables. Although I had never used moving platters before, I absolutely love them and can’t imagine going back. The mixer is spot-on, the layout is ideal, and working with stems is seamless. I’ve heard about some issues that others have encountered, but that’s typical with first-generation technology, so I hope those can be resolved. Plus, they sent me the gold version! Definitely worth the price. If you’re a push-button DJ, consider getting a Rev 5 instead, but if you want to have fun learning how to truly manipulate music, this is the one to grab.

I appreciated the straightforward setup process. However, I find myself seeking a more advanced board, especially since I purchased it at a significantly higher price than its current sale price.

The plug-and-play feature is a major advantage. Its compact size and exceptional quality truly justify the investment in these turntables. You’ll feel like a pro with the impressive performance and sound quality they deliver. Everything is well-constructed, with no strange noises coming from the knobs or buttons. If you’re a beginner mobile DJ, this is an essential purchase. I love the EQ options and sound effects, and the large turntables are fantastic. Overall, it’s an excellent product that I highly recommend!

If you do scratches and love hip hop, this is perfect for you. The design is specifically tailored for that purpose. While you can mix other genres, it may limit you a bit with electronic music and others. Personally, I find it visually appealing, but if you’re a beginner, it might not be the best option (try the DDJ FLX4 instead). I’ve seen good reviews for beginners regarding that model.
Awesome phone case –
This product performs excellently. It’s incredibly durable and the sound quality is outstanding. Absolutely worth the investment.

This is my second controller; I previously owned and loved the DDJ REV1. I’ve been learning for about a year, and this controller is fantastic. I really want to master scratching, and this feels like the most realistic non-turntable option out there. I wanted to stick with Pioneer DJ products, and I haven’t been let down. The size and weight are substantial, so I’d recommend getting a case and some sort of dust cover. I’ve had it for about two months, and the more I explore it, the more I appreciate it.

After transitioning from my trusty pair of Pioneer CDJ 800 MK2s from 2008 and a pristine DJM 450 from 2017, I can confidently say that this unit surpasses both the DJM 450 and those cherished CDJs by a wide margin!
The build quality is exceptional—solid, heavy, and exuding a professional feel. It’s constructed from a combination of thick, high-quality plastic and brushed aluminum, particularly around the jog wheel platters.
The mixer itself outperforms the DJM 450, which is already an outstanding $699 mixer! In my 15 years of DJing experience, I find the DDJ 800’s mixer to be significantly superior, offering more effects, superior faders, and an improved feel compared to the Magvel. The customization options in Rekordbox are extensive—you can even change the color of the FX preset buttons!
While the jog wheels are not mechanical, they actually feel better to me than the CDJ 800 MK2s. The jog adjust knob is a fantastic feature, allowing you to choose between a lighter touch or a firmer, professional feel. The play/cue buttons are also more responsive than those on new CDJs. The jog wheel tops are made of high-quality brushed aluminum that feels smooth and luxurious. It took me no time to adapt from mechanical to reactive jogs; they are tight and precise, even on the lightest setting.
The performance pads are incredibly customizable. The depth of options available for hot cues, effects, beat jumps, and more is impressive, and it took some time to tweak everything to my liking, but the effort was definitely worth it.
Rekordbox is user-friendly and allows me to access thousands of tracks easily with just a dial.
As an old-school DJ who started with vinyl and mastered CDJs, this equipment has made me extremely happy. Transitioning from discs to software was a challenge, but given my experience with Mixxx for testing tracks, picking this up was relatively easy.
I highly recommend the DDJ 800. I was fortunate to snag one for $775 (before tax) before the Pioneer promotion ended on 12/31. If you’re seeing prices at $899, I would still encourage you to purchase it at that price!
The performance and quality for the cost are unbeatable. This unit is truly amazing—solidly built and has significantly enhanced my mixing capabilities.
Even though I’ve retired from paid gigs, this unit performed wonderfully at a house party just two nights after I unboxed it and is also perfect for home use. Unless you absolutely need mechanical jogs and four channels, I wholeheartedly recommend grabbing the DDJ 800 first and considering your options afterward.

I used this product for nearly three months before experiencing touch-capacitive issues with the jog wheels. I loved the layout; it reminded me of my turntable setup. However, I’ve since switched back to my DDJ 400, which has been completely reliable. Maybe I just got a defective unit, but I own a lot of Pioneer gear, and I’ve never had problems right out of the box like this before. If you decide to buy it and encounter issues, don’t say I didn’t warn you – you’ll be thinking, “I should have listened to that seasoned DJ’s review.” Also, I experienced a similar problem with my DDJ SR2, but that didn’t happen until about three years later. By then, it had paid for itself many times over, so I gave it away for home practice, but the new owner is also frustrated with the glitches.
Recklessk –
This controller is fantastic for beginner DJs. It works seamlessly with Rekordbox DJ Pro. I would absolutely buy it again and highly recommend it to others!

I have to say I was really impressed with the quality of the materials and the numerous options it offers for mixing. It’s truly a GREAT piece of equipment for the price. I’m very happy with my controller.
