I purchased a set of Bowflex dumbbells back in 2012, and they’re still going strong. I’ve never had any issues with them jamming or malfunctioning. They adjust very smoothly and easily. The only downside is their length, but I got used to it quickly and can safely perform skull crushers. I also bought a stand to keep them off the basement floor in case of flooding. While they are on the pricier side, I believe they are worth the investment due to their quality. My son was so impressed that he decided to get a set for his apartment, although he opted out of the stand, thinking that bending over to adjust the weights would add to his workout.

I was really looking forward to trying out the Bowflex SelectTech 552 dumbbells, and here are my thoughts:
The packaging was impressive. The dumbbells were securely encased in thick styrofoam and placed in a sturdy cardboard box. They came wrapped in plastic and were strapped to the base, ensuring everything arrived in perfect condition. A big shoutout to Bowflex, Amazon, and UPS for that!
Right out of the box, these dumbbells are very easy to use. With two knobs on either end, you simply turn them to select your desired weight and lift. There’s no need to calculate weight plate combinations in your head, which is a huge plus. I love that you can even use them in “offset” mode—one weight on one side and a different one on the other, which is great for specific exercises. Bowflex explains this feature in more detail in the owner’s manual.
The operation is seamless. The knobs turn smoothly with a satisfying click when set to the correct weight, making lifting them out of the base and returning them easy.
The handles are fantastic! They have a textured grip, providing a secure hold, and there’s ample space to grasp them comfortably. Some pictures might make it seem cramped, but trust me, it’s not.
I do have a couple of minor complaints about the plates. First, they do shift a bit during exercises, but I’ve never felt they would come loose. It’s just an adjustment for me since I’m used to traditional solid dumbbells. The second point is regarding their width. To fit all the weight plates, these dumbbells need to be broad. I haven’t hit myself with them yet, but they do come close to my head during certain exercises like shoulder presses and upright rows, so just a word of caution there. I’ve also attached a photo of the dumbbell on a scale for weight accuracy.

In recent weeks, like many others, I’ve been searching for home gym equipment. Initially, I was unsure about the $399 price tag, but after reflecting, I realized that purchasing individual sets would likely cost much more and take up extra space.
After a week of using these dumbbells, I’m very pleased. They’re user-friendly, comfortable, and sturdy. It may take one or two workouts to adjust to the feel. Certain exercises, such as chest presses or squats, require a bit of tweaking in your positioning and wrist, but my range of motion has never been restricted.
These weights are obviously more delicate than those at a gym, so be sure not to drop them. If handled carefully, they quickly become comfortable to use and you won’t feel like you’re lifting awkward equipment. I highly recommend these dumbbells—they’re a fantastic value, save space, and are a wise investment now and for the future.
Edit: After 5 months of regular use, these have held up remarkably well with no issues. As others have pointed out, the weight discs do have a slight give, but I only noticed this after a month or two. In my opinion, it’s nothing to be concerned about, as long as you avoid dropping them hard.
