As someone who’s new to car care, I found this product incredibly easy to use! I’m using it to maintain the battery for a family member’s car while she recovers from surgery and won’t be driving for two months. I’m not looking for long-term storage solutions, so the 2018 reviews mentioning a one-year lifespan after the manufacturer moved to China are irrelevant to me.
I really like the built-in safety feature that prevents sparking if the clips touch each other. The device doesn’t allow current to flow until it detects at least 3 volts. This might make it challenging to charge a completely dead battery, but it worked perfectly for our situation.
When setting it up, you need to choose between small-ring connectors for devices like ATVs or boats that will sit idle for over six months and alligator clips for cars that will be connected for a few months. It helps to have color vision to differentiate between the red and black clips, as one side of the alligator clips has a (+) symbol and the other side indicates (+) and (-).
The trickiest part for me was figuring out if my car had a negative-ground or positive-ground system, as mentioned in step 6e/f of the manual. While it says most cars are negative-grounded, I was cautious because car batteries are significant and require care. After some careful inspection, I confirmed that the wire from the (-) side of the battery connected to the metal chassis of the vehicle. The (+) side had a plastic cover that made connecting the alligator clip a bit tricky, and its wire went to other engine components. This gave me confidence to connect the black clip to the (-) terminal and the red clip to a nut-and-bolt part of the engine. I managed to close the hood almost all the way by flattening the clips, and even though it’s not latched, it should be protected from dust and spiders in the garage. I couldn’t thread the cable through the front grille due to space constraints.
My only issue with the product is that the cable splits too close to the alligator clips. A further split would make it easier to reach parts of the engine block or chassis. Additionally, I suggest adding diagrams to clarify the instructions. While the manual states to connect to the engine block or chassis and avoid sheet metal or fluid lines, a visual reference would help many users differentiate between the two.
Once everything was connected, I plugged in the “wall wart” (shoutout to Adam Savage for that term) and the light turned steady red, which was reassuring since it had blinked red when I tested it without connections. Six hours later, the light was blinking green, and after another six hours, it turned steady green, indicating the ideal state for maintaining the battery while it’s not in use. I’m very satisfied!
Considering our car battery was already diagnosed as “on its last legs,” this affordable product is perfect for our two-month need. I would recommend that anyone with a high-end car or battery requiring storage for six months or more do additional research and invest a bit more.
