The SwissGear 1900 Scansmart TSA 17 Laptop Backpack stands out as a versatile and functional option that caters to various needs. With its thoughtful design and robust construction, this backpack is a worthy investment for anyone in need of reliable storage for their tech and travel essentials.

Dimensions and Build Quality

Measuring 9 x 13.25 x 18.5 inches and weighing just under 3 pounds, the SwissGear 1900 strikes a balance between spaciousness and portability. It boasts a total capacity of 31 liters, allowing ample room for a 17-inch laptop, a tablet, and a plethora of other items. The backpack’s rugged construction is complemented by weather-resistant material, ensuring that your belongings remain safe and dry, regardless of the elements. The reinforced zippers and sturdy build speak to its durability, making it a reliable choice for daily use or travel.

Organizational Features

One of the standout features of the SwissGear 1900 is its organizational capabilities. The enhanced laptop compartment allows for easy access to your device while providing excellent protection with padded lining. The inclusion of a dedicated TabletSafe tablet pocket adds another layer of convenience for tech-savvy users.

The main compartment features an accordion file holder, making it easy to separate documents and work-related materials, while the RFID-protected organizer compartment safeguards your credit cards and sensitive information from electronic scanning. This attention to detail sets the SwissGear 1900 apart, especially for travelers concerned about security.

The multiple pockets, including a front pocket and two side quick-access compartments, provide additional storage options for everyday essentials like chargers, pens, and personal items. The mesh side pockets accommodate water bottles or umbrellas, enhancing the bag’s functionality.

Comfort and Ergonomics

Comfort is crucial for a backpack, particularly for those who may carry it for extended periods. The SwissGear 1900 excels in this area, featuring ergonomically contoured, padded shoulder straps that distribute weight evenly. The adjustable compression straps allow for further customization, ensuring a secure fit. The airflow back padding improves ventilation, reducing discomfort on hot days or during long treks. The backpack’s robust design allows it to endure everyday wear and tear, making it suitable for various lifestyles.

A Few Considerations

While the SwissGear 1900 boasts many impressive features, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Some users have noted that the backpack is slightly heavier than expected, which may be a factor for those who prioritize lightweight options. Additionally, its size may not fit comfortably under certain airplane seats, necessitating alternative storage arrangements when traveling.

After years of reliable service, my old backpack finally gave out, prompting me to search for a new one. As I frequently travel with my 15″ laptop, I needed a bag that offered security and ample organization. This backpack checks all those boxes perfectly. My 15″ HP laptop fits snugly with extra space for protection, and it even has a designated sleeve for a tablet. The various pockets and compartments are thoughtfully designed, making it easy to organize everything from books and notebooks to pens, phones, headphones, and other office supplies. The backpack is robust and well-constructed. So why only 4 stars? There are two reasons: first, while the sturdiness is a major plus, it does make the backpack feel a bit heavy — not excessively so, but it’s definitely on the heavier side. Second, its size can be an issue on certain flights; it doesn’t fit under the aisle seat, so I had to place it under the middle seat, where there was more room (thanks to my wife for accommodating me!). Overall, this backpack is a fantastic value and should serve me well for years to come.

This backpack is fantastic! It features high-quality material, has an attractive design, and offers ample storage space. I use it for travel, school, camping, and more. Additionally, the anti-RFID lining protects your cards; however, the downside is that if you have a keyless entry car, the key won’t work unless you remove it from the bag. Overall, I’d rate it 9.7/10.

This backpack is excellent! It’s made from high-quality materials and features a water-resistant body that keeps the interior dry. It’s incredibly sturdy, allowing you to pack it full without worry, and the padded straps are strong enough to handle the load. There’s plenty of room to easily fit my 15″ laptop, two wool sweaters, files, notebooks, reading glasses, and other travel essentials in the well-organized pockets. With a bit of effort, I could also fit my 17″ laptop. Plus, it looks fantastic—the black and slate gray color is much more stylish in person than in the photos. I only wish I had replaced my old travel backpack sooner!

I’ve owned a lot of backpacks over the years, purchasing new ones regularly since high school. I bought this particular bag primarily because it accommodates my 17″ laptop and also to replace my old, worn-out daily backpack for city use. Overall, this backpack is impressively sturdy, spacious, and versatile—possibly the best one I’ve ever owned.

It arrived at my workplace alongside several other items I ordered from Amazon. On my way home, I managed to fit my old, partially filled backpack inside it, along with two packaged tablecloths, two shower curtain liners, and a few smaller items—all without any hassle. Just two days later, I packed 25 lbs of groceries into it with ease, leaving room to spare; I didn’t even need to use the zippered side pockets, though I could have added a couple more pounds in there. Both times, the loaded backpack sat comfortably near the center of my back, even without adjusting the straps.

The cushioning on the back is generous but not excessive, and the “airflow” feature between the cushioned areas does enhance comfort. The straps are wide, padded, and elastic, with a trapezoidal piece of sturdy, one-way stretch material near the top that allows for vertical stretch. When carrying groceries, the pack didn’t bounce around, and the elastic functioned like a shock absorber, preventing the straps from digging into my shoulders, which is a common issue with other backpacks under heavy loads.

The main material feels thick and durable, the exterior front pockets are well-placed, and the zippers appear strong and reliable. The stitching on the seams and strap connections seems very robust. Initially, I was unsure about the solid plastic handle on the top of the front compartment, but I’ve come to appreciate it. On the subway, I had to carry the pack by the handle, which provided a solid grip akin to luggage. When wearing the pack, the handle doesn’t interfere with head movements at all.

If I have any minor complaints, I’d prefer the “organizer pocket” on the bottom front to have a stiffer accessory sleeve for pens and similar items, but I’m sure I can manage as is, or maybe invest in a small organizer to fit inside. Overall, this backpack is excellent; it might be a bit much if you only need to carry light items regularly, but if you require something durable for heavy loads or as a carry-on for travel, this is an outstanding choice.

As a side note, to highlight its sturdiness: shortly after receiving the backpack, I watched a segment on “Gorilla Doctors,” where veterinarians in the jungle were using what looked like this exact backpack. If it’s good enough for jungle vets, it’s definitely worth considering!

Durable, comfortable, and offers ample space for carrying items; you can easily fit a couple of tennis rackets inside.

I have owned this same model of backpack for over 15 years due to the excellent quality of its materials and the numerous compartments it offers. I carry it everywhere every day, and it withstands rough use perfectly (rain, dust, sweat…). The latest one I purchased is slightly taller than the previous ones, allowing me to carry a lot of items (devices, keys, clothes…) without any issues. I have a 15″ laptop, and it fits perfectly along with its case, even though it’s a bit thick. While it may not be the most aesthetically pleasing, it is incredibly functional and durable. Highly recommend it for everyday use, school, work, and travel.

This is an excellent heavy-duty backpack. I appreciate the variety of compartments, and the zippers are strong and easy to use. The numerous storage options are a big plus. I highly recommend this bag to others, and if it ever breaks, I would definitely purchase another from this seller. The straps are thick and adjustable, making it very comfortable. A fantastic buy!
