Makeblock mBot Robot Kit Review: A STEM Learning Experience for Kids Ages 8-12
In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, equipping our children with the skills they need for the future has never been more important. The Makeblock mBot Robot Kit stands out as a fantastic educational tool for children aged 8-12, blending coding, robotics, and fun into a single package. This review will delve into its features, usability, educational value, and overall impact on young learners, drawing from user experiences and insights.
Overview of the mBot Robot Kit
The mBot Robot Kit is designed to introduce children to the world of electronics, robotics, and programming in a fun and engaging way. At a compact size of 6.69 x 3.55 x 5.12 inches and weighing 2.2 pounds, it is portable enough for home use and easy to store. This kit is marketed for children aged 8 and up and has been a popular choice since its release on July 16, 2019.
Educational Value: Learning Through Play
One of the standout features of the mBot is its focus on STEM education. The kit offers a rich curriculum that includes resources for learning to code using Scratch and Arduino, which helps to demystify complex programming concepts for young learners. Users have noted that the progression from a graphical Scratch interface to actual coding is a significant advantage. It allows kids to build confidence as they learn to program, making it an excellent stepping stone for more advanced coding skills in the future.
The interactive software, coupled with coding cards and tutorials, makes the learning process accessible. Many parents, including those with no prior programming experience, have reported that the resources provided are sufficient to guide their children through various projects. The ability to create a functioning robot enhances the hands-on experience, making abstract coding concepts tangible.
Easy Assembly: A Fun Family Activity
Parents and children alike have praised the ease of building the mBot. Clear instructions enable children to assemble the robot in approximately 15 minutes. This quick assembly allows kids to dive straight into exploring and programming their new creation. Many users shared stories of their children working independently or alongside family members to complete the build, fostering teamwork and communication skills in the process.
Features and Functionality
The mBot offers a variety of functions, such as line-following and obstacle-avoidance, which can be programmed through the accompanying apps. The kit is compatible with over 100 electronic modules and 500+ parts from the Makeblock platform, as well as LEGO parts, making it versatile for creative projects. This open-source system encourages children to explore and innovate, as they can expand their robot with additional components.
However, several users pointed out that while the robot is sturdy and well-made, the programming tools can be challenging to download and navigate. Some parents recommend ensuring that the firmware is updated before attempting to use Bluetooth connectivity, as it can significantly enhance the functionality of the mBot.
User Experiences: Positive Feedback from Families
The feedback from parents and children alike has been overwhelmingly positive. Many users have noted that the mBot has not only provided hours of entertainment but has also sparked a genuine interest in programming and robotics. One parent excitedly shared that their son found the robot neither too easy nor too hard, allowing him to enjoy the challenge.
Another user praised the robot’s durability, suggesting that it’s not just a toy but a serious educational tool that can withstand the rigors of active play. The ability to attach LEGO creations adds an extra layer of excitement, as children can personalize their mBot and create unique configurations.
Despite some minor challenges with the software and app compatibility, most users appreciated the available resources on Makeblock’s forums, where they found community support for troubleshooting.
Conclusion: A Worthy Investment for Future Innovators
The Makeblock mBot Robot Kit is an exceptional choice for parents looking to introduce their children to STEM concepts in a fun and interactive way. It encourages creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills—essential attributes for future innovators. With its ease of assembly, educational resources, and endless possibilities for exploration, the mBot stands out as a top-tier robotics kit for kids ages 8-12.

I gave this as a gift to my ex-girlfriend’s child, and even now, he continues to use it and claims it’s the best birthday present he’s ever received.

I purchased this for my grandson’s 11th birthday, and he really enjoyed it. He mentioned that it struck the perfect balance—not too easy, but not too challenging either. It took him two evenings to complete, and he was thrilled to show me his finished work.

This toy stands out from the typical options available for kids. It’s built to withstand wear and tear, with features that are only restricted by the creativity of both kids and parents. My main concern is that the programming tools are not user-friendly for downloading or understanding. Additionally, I would prefer a progressive programming approach, starting with a beginner-friendly graphic style and advancing to C++ for more experienced learners.

Typically, when I purchase a toy for my 9-year-old daughter, I expect it to hold her interest for just a few months before she moves on to something else. However, this little robot is different—it offers endless possibilities for creative play that will keep her engaged for a long time. She feels a great sense of accomplishment programming something she created herself. It’s the ideal mix of challenge (especially since she’s never coded before) and intuitive use. Plus, it comes with a remote for casual play. We were pleasantly surprised to discover that she could attach her Lego creations to it; she even built a Lego trailer for the robot to tow her stuffed animals around. This is an excellent toy, and I couldn’t be happier with this purchase.

This isn’t just a toy, but that doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable! The machine is very durable and features genuine robot components. I find the programming just as engaging and addictive as my child does. The projects are entertaining, but we completed them quickly, so I had to create additional challenges to maintain interest.
A couple of things to note: the software and documentation aren’t flawless. I’ve had to troubleshoot a bit, which might be challenging for parents without prior programming experience or a basic understanding of electronics. The makeblock forums have been extremely helpful for resolving issues.
Overall, everyone adores mBot, and it has provided a fantastic learning experience.

This toy is absolutely amazing for my 8-year-old son; he loves it! I especially appreciate that it allows programming through both a Scratch-like GUI and actual coding. Having worked extensively with the TI MSP430 to control motors and machines in college, it’s fascinating to see how much technology has advanced over the past 20 years. My son gets to enjoy these innovations much earlier than I did. A tip for everyone: make sure to upgrade the firmware using a USB cable before trying out the Bluetooth dongle. It seems the dongle doesn’t function until the latest firmware is installed.

I purchased this for my coworker’s son, and it was the perfect gift! The value and quality are impressive, and they had a great time assembling it. It was both enjoyable and educational.

We got the Mbot for Christmas, and our 9-year-old daughter was thrilled. The assembly process went smoothly, and she had a great time doing it. The remote control is fantastic and easy to use. There are even programming apps available in German. As a father, I’m very impressed, and thankfully, so is our daughter. If you know your child will love it, it might be worth paying the extra for the Mbot 2 to enjoy a larger range of features.

Building it was straightforward; my 10-year-old managed to do it alone. However, it took us around 4 hours to figure out the controls. The app in the Android store only supports very old phones, and even when you find one and install it, it still doesn’t function properly. The Chrome browser app is also ineffective. To get everything working on your current device, make sure to use the QR code on the mblocks website to download and install the updated Android app. Once you do that, it finally works.
