Many users have commented on how the colors are vibrant and text is crisp, making it suitable for both professional and personal use. The quality remains consistent over time, and the longevity of the toner cartridges contributes to user satisfaction.
Challenges and Limitations
While many reviews are positive, a few users reported issues with Wi-Fi connectivity. Some experienced difficulties with the printer randomly showing as offline, despite being connected and operational within the HP app. Others have pointed out that the printer may generate false “out of paper” errors, which can be frustrating but do not prevent the printer from executing jobs once a workaround is found.

The print quality is excellent. The only downside is that it doesn’t handle heavy-weight papers well.

The setup process was a bit awkward, but if you have a standard Wi-Fi configuration, it shouldn’t be too difficult for you. After overcoming that initial challenge, I was able to print text documents effortlessly from my MacBook Air running macOS 14 (Sonoma). However, it struggled with graphics, claiming to be printing but never completing the task. After upgrading to macOS 15 (Sequoia), it now handles graphics well, likely due to some updates in Apple’s AirPrint. So, the takeaway is that Apple can occasionally fix issues like this. It does still have a persistent false “Out of Paper” error that I can’t seem to eliminate, but since it successfully prints what I send, I’ve bumped my rating up by one star.

I was frustrated with my laser jet printed pages smudging when they got damp, so I decided to try this LaserJet printer, and I’m really glad I did! After over a year of use, I’m thoroughly impressed with its performance and print quality. I opt for the high yield cartridges, which are incredibly easy to install and replace. Simply pull out a tray, lift out the old cartridge, and insert the new one. Once the tray is back in place, it goes through a quick cycle to prepare and calibrate the cartridge. We’ve encountered very few issues with connectivity or paper jams. I did have to reconnect the printer to our router a couple of times, but it was straightforward. It works well through walls; my husband can connect from his office, which is at the opposite end of the house. Changing paper sizes or refilling is a breeze. The print quality far surpasses my old HP OfficeJet! The only downside for me is the high cost of the proprietary cartridges, but that’s just part of owning a LaserJet. In the past 15 months, I’ve replaced the black toner twice and the color toners twice, but actual usage will vary based on your printing habits. I’m planning to start a new business this fall, so I anticipate needing even more toner and paper then. I recommend purchasing a full set of high yield cartridges to keep on hand, as the ones that come with the printer don’t last long. When one cartridge runs out, I order a spare to ensure I’m prepared since the colors deplete at different rates. I’ve noticed a newer model available, but if the price is right, don’t hesitate to buy this one!

I recently ordered the HP 3201 DW, and it has exceeded my expectations. I decided to upgrade to a laser printer for my home office, and after considering the pros and cons, I took a chance on this model. A week in, I must say everything is going smoothly. The colors are vibrant, printing is fast, and it’s relatively quiet. Setting it up with my iMac was a breeze—just plug it in, and my wife pressed a few buttons, and voilà, wifi printing was ready. No need for HP downloads, and it even works seamlessly with my Samsung phone. I can print directly from my Samsung without any issues. I’m very satisfied with the delivery, ease of use, print quality, size, price, and overall appearance. This is the “newer” version, and I opted for the extended warranty just to be safe.

The printer is nearly unusable over Wi-Fi.
Setting it up was straightforward, and it worked well initially—just plug it in, connect to Wi-Fi, add it to your laptop or phone, and start printing. It functioned perfectly the first time.
However, when I tried to print again from my laptop or phone, it suddenly showed “printer is offline.” No amount of troubleshooting seems to work; rebooting the printer or laptop, reconnecting to Wi-Fi—nothing helps.
Interestingly, when I open the HP app on my laptop, it recognizes the printer as online and shows its status and toner level. Yet, I still can’t print because the print queue insists it’s offline. After a random amount of time, it might recognize the printer as online again, allowing me to print—until it goes offline after a brief pause. This cycle repeats endlessly.
There are some suggested troubleshooting steps, like setting it as the default printer, but they only work once. After a period of inactivity, I’m back to square one with everything saying it’s offline. And yes, it’s already set as the default, and all troubleshooting has been attempted.
The same issues occur when printing from my phone. The first attempt may work, but subsequent tries often result in an offline status. Occasionally, it might recognize the printer as online after a wait, but sometimes it just won’t. Trying to add it via Wi-Fi Direct works initially, but the next attempt usually fails. If I try to remove and re-add it, the phone detects the printer but won’t install it.
Using the HP Smart app and other required apps doesn’t help either. They often fail to recognize the printer, yet after I return to the print dialog, it might show up using the HP plugin. It’s baffling.
Regardless of the operating system—MacOS, Windows, Android—I’m facing the same issues. I’ve tried various routers and settings, and I’m currently sitting right next to the printer on the same network, yet I can’t print anything while being able to use everything else.
The thought of needing to print again fills me with dread, as I’ll have to go through a frustrating series of random actions, hoping to appease the printer gods. Why is it so difficult to create a reliable Wi-Fi printer driver?
