The scanner is highly efficient and fast; the best part is that it scans both sides simultaneously, saving time without the need to flip or adjust the document.

My old laptop, which I used with this scanner without any issues (originally Windows 7, later upgraded to Windows 10), finally gave out. Now, with my new desktop running Windows 11, I face a frustrating problem: each time I want to use the scanner, I have to reinstall the TWAIN software because it ‘forgets’ the scanner connection. After using the scanner, it loses recognition again after some time, forcing me to repeat the reinstall process. This is completely unacceptable, and Canon hasn’t provided any workaround other than this tedious reinstalling. If this had happened from the start, I would have returned the scanner.

However, I managed to resolve the connection issue by completely removing the Canon scanner software from my computer and reinstalling it. To my surprise, the problem disappeared! After all my years with computers, I should have thought of that sooner. With this issue resolved, I find it to be a fantastic scanner, especially for digitizing large volumes of pages.

I was in search of a printer to convert several boxes of old engineering documents into digital format, and so far, I’ve been impressed with the R40. My current printer can scan, but it’s slow, noisy, and offers subpar quality—not suitable for my needs.

The setup was straightforward. I had to download a 525 MB software file. I initially missed the note directing US customers to a specific download link, but despite my slow download speeds, installation went smoothly.

    Pros:

    1. Speed: When I first used it, I ran about 4 or 5 pages at 200 dpi greyscale, and the scanner handled them quickly. I was amazed by the speed, even at 300 dpi color (max is 600 dpi). It outperforms the scanner built into my printer by a long shot—I can’t keep up with it!

    2. Page orientation: The scanner does a commendable job of rotating pages accurately. I discovered a section in the software for manual rotation, but it would be helpful if Canon integrated this into a right-click option for easier access. I want to conduct more tests, but so far, it has successfully oriented pages correctly, even when I flipped them or placed them upside down.

    3. Paper handling: It manages flimsy magazine paper well. While ragged edges aren’t a concern, any leftover glue from backing can jam the scanner. If you feel bumps along the edges, remove or trim them to prevent feeding issues.

    4. Compact size: With the document feeder and output tray extended, its dimensions are about 12″ high by 15″ deep by 11″ wide. When the feeder is removed and the tray retracted, it shrinks to about 7.5″ high by 6.5″ deep by 11″ wide.

    5. Included cables: All necessary cables were provided, which is a relief. There’s nothing worse than unboxing a new device only to find you need to buy additional cables.

    6. Return shipping: Included return shipping offers peace of mind in case I decide the scanner isn’t for me. Return shipping can often be a nasty surprise.

    7. Versatile power supply: The power supply accommodates 100V to 240V, which is a nice feature, although I doubt I’ll take it on international trips.

    Cons:

    1. Unhelpful manual: The software version of the manual is not user-friendly. When I had pages scanned upside down, the ‘rotate’ function didn’t provide useful guidance.

    2. File saving issues: I finally figured out how to set up a one-touch button to save scanned files directly to my hard drive. Before that, sometimes my files saved properly, and other times they vanished without a trace, which was frustrating and slowed down my workflow.

    3. Picture scanning: While it does an acceptable job with images, I wouldn’t choose this scanner for extensive photo scanning. That said, I didn’t deduct any points for this, as it wasn’t my primary reason for purchase.

2023 Update: After returning from a six-month cruise, I decided to scan all the daily cruise reports. It was quick and easy, especially when switching from full color to greyscale, which was more than sufficient for my needs. Full-color scans look great but result in large file sizes, though that’s manageable with today’s multi-terabyte hard drives.

Overall, it’s good, but it doesn’t come with installation discs, which makes it a bit complicated and cumbersome to install the files on the computer. Everything else is great.

I was thinking about replacing my all-in-one printer that did a decent job of printing, copying, and faxing, but had a slow scanning speed. Instead of being wasteful, I opted for this compact dedicated scanner, and I couldn’t be happier. It focuses on one task and excels at it. You can feed in multiple pages of various sizes, and it automatically scans both sides, saving them in .pdf, jpeg, and other formats. The scanned images are true to the original document size, and you can easily attach files to emails or save them to your hard drive. It’s an impressive little device and costs half as much as an all-in-one. Oh, and I should mention how incredibly fast it is.

UPDATE: It’s still performing wonderfully, but there’s one drawback. When it powers on, a large blue light illuminates, and after a few minutes, it goes into hibernation mode, causing the blue light to blink. It’s impossible to ignore and quite annoying. I usually just turn it off, but I wish the manufacturer would address this bothersome feature.

I’ve used flatbed scanners for years, but this double-sided roller scanner is a game changer (with the exception of high-quality photos). After my business trips, I easily scan all the receipts from my wallet. When invoices or payments come in, I scan them right away before processing. The PDFs are structured with images and the actual text from the OCR engine hidden behind them. Now, any paper I receive is fully SEARCHABLE!
