Typically, when this happens for the first time, there’s usually another route available; it might be longer, but hopefully, you have enough trains to make it work, as that’s the challenge you have to navigate.

At the start, you have several cards in hand depicting train cars of various colors. On your turn, you can:
As you lay down your trains, you accumulate points—the longer your track, the more points you earn. Successfully completing a route on your destination card also earns you points, but you’ll have to keep those hidden until the game ends.
The game finishes after a full round when someone has fewer than four trains left—everyone else gets one last turn.
Points are scored as mentioned, but any destinations you fail to complete will count against you. Ouch!

I hate to tell you what to do, but…
Keep an eye on how many trains your opponents have left. Don’t be foolish and fill your hand with destination cards if you won’t have time to complete them. If a route you need overlaps with one your opponent might need, prioritize getting there first, even if it seems easy.
Consider drawing more destination cards in your first couple of turns, enabling you to work on related routes throughout the game rather than juggling the initial cards you drew and more drawn later.
What do I mean by “related”? For instance:
There’s a good chance that the first and third routes will overlap, while the second won’t, so I would recommend discarding the second route while keeping the other two.
Theme
Several spin-offs have emerged from Ticket to Ride, alongside expansions for the original game that add smaller routes. While the theme can be adjusted, Ticket to Ride Europe maintains similar gameplay with a few twists, like allowing players to use opponents’ routes without scoring points for them, and routes requiring tunnels through mountains cost more. These standalone games give Days of Wonder the means to charge full price for what could have been an expansion.
You might argue, “But they’re different boards!” True, but Rio Grande has managed to offer double-sided boards (which means two new maps) and new rule sets for Power Grid for less than half the original game’s price.
“Oh, really?” Yup.
Regarding the theme itself, I think the original game is quite strong. The tension of scrambling for routes to complete destinations—especially with multiple destination cards hanging in the balance—can be incredibly intense, particularly when you’re trying to reach your goal before someone blocks you. Those little plastic trains are just adorable!
Balance
Although I often critique luck-based elements in games, the fact that you don’t have to keep every destination card you draw helps balance the game. The availability of several face-up cards to choose from also contributes to this. The ability to build anywhere is a welcome contrast to the constraints of Power Grid. Overall, I have no complaints despite the card elements.
Interaction
Interaction is minimal. While you can offer verbal congratulations, expect some exclamations of frustration or indifference after someone lays down track. If you can’t reach the cards you need, there will be the occasional, “Give me those two oranges!” or “How about two from the mystery pile?” That said, this game could easily be played in silence, so if you’re entertaining introverts, they likely already know what to expect.
Learning Curve
Low. The purchase price card shows you the costs, and the mechanics surrounding rolling dice and the Robber’s actions are straightforward. Each development card clearly states its function. While the rules are simple, the options are quite limited, with a clear objective.

Minimal. Although you have to wait your turn, the track you want to buy might get snatched up during someone else’s turn. By paying attention, you can respond with groans when it matters most.

I honestly can’t think of anything bad to say that I haven’t already mentioned.
