In-Depth Review of Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones

The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones have garnered significant acclaim since their debut, becoming a favorite among audio professionals and casual listeners alike. With a sleek black design and a host of impressive features, these headphones promise a high-quality listening experience that meets the demands of studio monitoring and everyday use. In this article, we will delve into the various aspects of the ATH-M50x, focusing on their sound isolation, frequency response, design, comfort, and overall performance to help you determine if they are the right headphones for you.

Sound Isolation: A Sanctuary for Your Ears

One of the standout features of the ATH-M50x is its circumaural design, which contours around the ears, creating a snug fit that provides excellent sound isolation. This design is particularly beneficial in loud environments, allowing users to immerse themselves in their audio without external distractions. Many users have praised the sound isolation capabilities of the M50x, noting that it effectively blocks out ambient noise, making them ideal for studio work or even casual listening in bustling settings.

The headphones are built with a frequency response that extends up to 28,000 Hz, which ensures that every note, from the deepest bass tones to the highest frequencies, is reproduced with outstanding clarity. This extended range is especially valuable for audio professionals who require precision in their sound monitoring.

Exceptional Audio Performance

Equipped with proprietary 45 mm large-aperture drivers featuring rare earth magnets and copper-clad aluminum wire voice coils, the ATH-M50x delivers an audio performance that is both powerful and nuanced. The headphones produce exceptional clarity across the frequency spectrum, boasting deep, accurate bass response that can vibrate the headphones when turned up.

Users have reported being able to hear details they previously missed, such as the intricate sounds of cymbals or hi-hats, which are often lost in lesser-quality headphones. This makes the M50x a fantastic choice not only for mixing and music production but also for enjoying music across various genres. The sound signature is relatively flat, allowing for greater flexibility in equalization, which is a significant advantage for users who want to tailor their listening experience.

Comfort and Design

The ATH-M50x is designed with the user’s comfort in mind. The professional-grade earpad and headband material ensure durability and comfort during extended listening sessions. Many users have noted that the headphones fit snugly without causing discomfort, even during long hours of use. The 90-degree swiveling earcups are another thoughtful feature that allows for easy one-ear monitoring, an essential aspect for professionals who may need to keep one ear open to their environment.

The detachable cable, with a length of 3 meters, provides flexibility and ease of use, reducing the chances of accidental snags. The headphones are lightweight, weighing in at just 0.29 kg (10.2 ounces), making them comfortable for prolonged wear.

Versatility and Compatibility

The ATH-M50x is compatible with a wide range of devices, including cell phones, tablets, desktops, and laptops, making them a versatile choice for personal use. Whether you’re listening to music, watching movies, or mixing tracks, the M50x can adapt to your needs with ease. The inclusion of a 3.5 mm jack ensures a broad compatibility range, and the wired connectivity technology guarantees a stable and uninterrupted audio experience.

Price and Value

While the price point of the ATH-M50x may initially raise some eyebrows, many users find that the quality of construction and audio performance justifies the investment. The headphones are built to last, with many users reporting that they have served them reliably for years. The balance of quality, durability, and sound performance positions the M50x as an excellent value in the market.

User Experiences

User reviews highlight a consistent theme of satisfaction with the ATH-M50x. From professional audio engineers to casual listeners, many share their admiration for the headphones’ sound quality and comfort. Some users, even those with hearing impairments, reported being able to appreciate a wider range of sounds and bass responses that they had not experienced with other headphones. The comfort level and sound isolation have been particularly praised, with users noting the ease of use during long sessions.

Summary of User Feedback:

  1. Audio Quality: Exceptional clarity with a balanced sound signature; noticeable differences from gaming headsets.
  2. Comfort: Snug fit without discomfort, suitable for long use.
  3. Build Quality: Durable materials with a professional feel.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones are a remarkable choice for anyone seeking high-quality audio performance, comfort, and durability. With their exceptional sound isolation, impressive frequency response, and versatile compatibility, they cater to both professional audio applications and casual listening. While they may not be the cheapest option on the market, the blend of quality and performance makes them worth every penny.

The headphones are simply amazing. I have an audio amplifier that enhances their performance to perfection. I recommend getting some protection for the leather that touches your hair, as it can crack over time (which is normal for this type of leather). Even though these headphones are of high quality and price, the leather won’t stay flawless forever.

They are very comfortable, enveloping the ears and providing excellent isolation. Even with everything well-isolated, you can still hear some sounds without having to take them off. The price might make you hesitant, but for me, it’s justified by the exceptional build quality and the unparalleled audio quality.

I use these headphones in a professional studio environment for music recording, and they offer incredible value in terms of quality, sound, and overall experience. Audio-Technica consistently delivers top-notch products, and the ATH-M50x is no exception to their reputation. The cord is impressively long, and the included carrying case is a nice touch. They are also very comfortable to wear for extended periods. I have no doubts they will last a lifetime. Couldn’t be happier with my purchase!

I’m not an audiophile, so this review is intended for everyday listeners with average hearing. If you’re an audiophile or a “super listener,” this may not be for you—please skip these and avoid leaving a negative review, as it won’t benefit the majority of users. Accepting that most of us don’t have extraordinary hearing is key.

I rated the audio quality 5 stars because even casual listeners can easily distinguish these from typical gaming headsets. This distinction is significant for everyday use. Many so-called “high-end” headsets sound quite similar to these, but for music listening and sound accuracy, these headphones excel. The bass is good, but not overwhelming like some headphones; it’s balanced and neutral. The level of detail in the sound is impressive—I’ve noticed elements in songs I hadn’t before. This is based on my perspective as a regular listener, so you might have a similar experience.

For noise cancellation, I gave 4 stars. They block a substantial amount of sound but lack active noise cancellation, leaving room for improvement. However, I believe most casual users will find it adequate. A note for those with prominent ears: these might be uncomfortable, as the foam over the speakers can irritate. Personally, it’s not an issue for me since my ears are close to my head.

For gaming, I rated them 4 stars. Since these headphones are not primarily designed for gaming, the rating depends on what you seek. If sound accuracy is your goal, they shine in that area. However, if you want exaggerated bass for explosive sound effects or heightened treble to detect distant footsteps, these may not meet your needs. While they can deliver both, it’s in a balanced, accurate manner—not competitive-level gaming. For casual gamers, however, these provide a more authentic sound experience, which most gaming headsets fail to deliver by focusing heavily on treble for competitive play.

Who are these headphones for? They aren’t meant for professionals or audiophiles but for everyday listeners. If you’re a casual listener, you’ll appreciate the difference in sound quality they offer, unlike many pricier “audiophile” models. These headphones are perfect for those who prefer a balanced sound profile, not those seeking an unbalanced audio experience.

In summary, these headphones offer outstanding value for anyone looking for a balanced, accurate sound profile. They’re definitely a “just buy it” recommendation for everyday users.

I appreciate these headphones for mixing and music production.

Let me begin by mentioning that I am significantly hard of hearing due to a bout of bacterial meningitis in my childhood, so please consider my perspective accordingly.

General Summary: These headphones allow me to hear and feel bass, and I occasionally pick up sounds I couldn’t hear before, like cymbals and hi-hats, though I must note that the volume can reach dangerously loud levels (85-90 dB+). Volume is not an issue; I can crank them up to a level that hurts, but I rarely do so because of my hearing loss.

For Music: The bass actually vibrates the headphones at higher volumes, even though they’re not specifically EQ-tuned for bass (which is a plus, as it provides a better baseline for EQ adjustments). I can detect sounds that were previously inaudible, including subtle details in the mix.

For Gaming: The clarity is outstanding, and I experience improved situational awareness in games, though I still miss some details due to my hearing issues. The sound feels really “full,” and I rarely encounter volume problems while gaming.

For Movies/Videos (YouTube, Netflix, etc.): I can hear everything clearly, except for softer speaking or whispering. Even with added sound effects and distortions, I understand the content better than with any other headphones I’ve used. My previous headset was a Logitech Artemis, which impressed me until I tried these; now, these headphones surpass Logitech. Both options are surprisingly affordable and notably lack in-line controls, which I appreciate for their durability.

Durability: I’ve accidentally dropped these multiple times and experienced typical daily mishaps, yet they continue to function flawlessly without any damage.

I do have a minor complaint, likely related to my glasses or personal fit, as they sometimes don’t sit comfortably on my head. However, adjusting the ear cups helps, and once I get used to them, they’re incredibly comfortable even after 12+ hours of wear, which is typical for my daily PC use.

Overall, these headphones are durable, powerful, and comfortable. My only personal drawback relates to my PC’s hardware/software; I wish there was an app to monitor dB output to protect my hearing, as my default listening level is significantly higher due to my hearing loss. While I can perceive sounds in the 60 dB range, understanding them is challenging, and I often find myself nearing the 80 dB range, which poses a risk over extended periods.

In conclusion, I highly recommend this product, regardless of whether your hearing is normal or impaired. I haven’t found any significant faults, and I would definitely purchase again in the future—especially if they include an app for tracking dB levels, similar to Apple’s features for their AirPods. I hope such an app would be affordable (ideally between $5-10).

To anyone reading: I hope my insights as someone with hearing impairments have been helpful. Thank you for taking the time to read my review, and have a great day or night!

I was initially skeptical about these headphones, but after seeing numerous positive reviews on other channels, I decided to give them a try. I must say, I was really impressed by the sound quality. The highs are crystal clear, and the mids are very well-defined. The bass is good, perhaps a bit lacking for my taste as I prefer deeper bass, but overall, it’s quite balanced. In conclusion, I believe there’s no competition from other brands in terms of price and quality; these are even better than some well-known brands.

    GOODBYE

The fit is perfect and they don’t cause discomfort even after extended use. The material quality is impressive. I highly recommend them.
