I really like Brother printers, and this one ranks high on my list. It’s easy to set up (I added a Wi-Fi range extender for uninterrupted connectivity) and straightforward to use. I tend to print a lot, especially during a few busy weeks each year. This printer handled hours of continuous use but did reach the “grey” phase of print quality that I’ve noticed with all Brother MFC machines. I might be able to adjust the density and quality using a PC. I managed to produce decent copies by increasing the density, but that does lead to higher ink consumption. I went through both the included black cartridge and an “XL” black cartridge, which only produced about 250 pages—not as much as I’d hoped.
I’m intrigued by Brother’s auto refill option, but I’m unsure about which level to choose. While it increases automatically based on my printing habits, it doesn’t decrease with lower usage, and it feels a bit invasive knowing the company can track my printing volume. Thankfully, I can turn that feature off using the mobile app.
The printer easily supports two-sided printing, but for two-sided copying, you must place each side on the glass or set it to convert one side to two. The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) works well with 24lb paper, and the printing speed is impressive. The lower tray holds about 150 sheets, which helps prevent jams.
I haven’t tried scanning yet, but the printer can scan directly to a file without needing additional software. We use our MFC-J6920DW for faxing, but the color touchscreen and nice buttons on the 1010 would simplify that process.
The machine has a compact design and operates quietly. The wireless features work well with the Wi-Fi extender, and the mobile app is excellent with my S24+ phone—I can print straight from my Google Drive, which is super convenient. Ink prices fluctuate, but the LC401 cartridges are readily available. I picked up five XL black cartridges for under $40, which is a great deal. I’m still using the “starter” color cartridges. Overall, for the price, this machine is a solid choice.
