You’ll notice the water level dropping because there will only be enough water to produce ice once some has melted, meaning you’ll find the ice partially melted rather than fully formed. When the ice looks smaller than usual, you know it’s time to add water before the indicator light signals low levels.
I haven’t had any issues with running out of ice. My only complaint is that since the ice is always melting, it tends to stick together. I’ve stopped using the provided scooper because the ice often clumps together, and I have to break it apart by hand. It’s not a major inconvenience, but it can be a bit annoying.

However, as a perfectionist, I have a few minor critiques: the first ice drop of each batch is about half as thick as the rest, and if you don’t transfer the ice right when the basket is full, it starts to melt and clump together.
