Review of the Bissell TurboClean Pet XL Upright Carpet Cleaner (Model 3746)
The Bissell TurboClean Pet XL Upright Carpet Cleaner has garnered attention for its remarkable cleaning capabilities, particularly in homes with pets. This review will delve into its features, performance, usability, and overall value based on various user experiences.
Design and Build Quality
Lightweight and Compact
One of the standout features of the Bissell TurboClean Pet XL is its lightweight design. Weighing in at only 23.26 pounds, this carpet cleaner is easy to maneuver, making it a suitable option for users of all ages. Its compact dimensions (12.83 x 17.71 x 25.04 inches) ensure that it does not take up much storage space, making it ideal for apartments or homes with limited storage.
Assembly and Components
The unit comes almost fully assembled, with only a few pieces that easily snap together. This user-friendly design allows for quick setup and immediate use. The inclusion of an upholstery tough stain tool further enhances its versatility, enabling users to tackle a variety of surfaces beyond just carpets.
Performance
Cleaning Power
The Bissell TurboClean Pet XL excels in its ability to tackle tough stains and odors, particularly those caused by pets. Users have noted significant improvements in carpet cleanliness, with some reporting that it removed long-standing urine stains and odors effectively. The Bissell Professional Pet Urine Eliminator + Oxy Carpet Cleaning Formula is recommended for maximum effectiveness, offering a pleasant scent that neutralizes odors without being overpowering.
Tank Capacity
While the cleaner holds 1 gallon of solution, some users have mentioned needing to refill frequently, especially when tackling larger areas. The smaller tank size can be a drawback for those looking to clean extensive carpeted spaces in one go. However, many users find that its cleaning efficiency compensates for this, often stating that it yields better results than professional cleaning services.
Usability
Ease of Use
The machine is praised for being easy to use. Users have reported quick assembly, intuitive controls, and a straightforward cleaning process. Watching instructional videos on the Bissell website has also been beneficial for many, allowing them to understand the machine’s operation and maintenance better.
Maintenance
Cleaning the Bissell TurboClean after use is simple, contributing to its overall appeal. The waste water tank is easy to empty and clean, ensuring that users can maintain the machine without hassle. However, some users have noted that the dirty water collection tank can be deceptive in terms of its capacity, requiring careful monitoring to avoid overflow.
Versatility
Upholstery and Area Rugs
In addition to carpets, the Bissell TurboClean is effective on upholstery and area rugs. Users have reported successful cleaning of couches and other furniture, often noting how quickly the fabric dries after use. This versatility makes it a valuable tool for maintaining cleanliness throughout the home, not just on carpets.
Limitations
While the Bissell TurboClean is effective on various surfaces, its smaller tank size may limit its efficiency in larger cleaning jobs. Users cleaning expansive areas may find themselves refilling the solution tank multiple times, which can be time-consuming.
Value for Money
Cost Comparison
When considering the price point of the Bissell TurboClean Pet XL, many users have expressed satisfaction with their purchase, especially when comparing it to the cost of hiring professional carpet cleaning services. The ability to clean whenever needed without additional costs adds to its value.
Overall Satisfaction
Feedback indicates that the Bissell TurboClean often meets or exceeds expectations, especially for pet owners who frequently deal with messes. Users appreciate the convenience of having a dedicated carpet cleaner at their disposal, which ultimately leads to a more hygienic home environment.

Based on user reviews and experiences, the Bissell TurboClean Pet XL Upright Carpet Cleaner earns the following ratings:

This product caused an electrical issue due to being incompatible with Ireland’s voltage. I assumed I ordered from Amazon.EU, but it came from Amazon Warehouse instead. Now we’re being asked to cover the return shipping costs, and the product was also broken. This is the first time I’ve been disappointed with Amazon’s response. The customer service agents I spoke with were wonderful, but I’ve had an account for nearly 20 years, and this experience has been frustrating.

I was surprised to find that the voltage and plug are not compatible with European standards. It operates at 120 volts, which poses a serious risk of fire and electrocution, especially since it involves water!

We have a small dog that is pad-trained and an indoor cat, which means we occasionally deal with pet messes, especially urine. Having never owned an upright carpet cleaner before, I decided to give one a try, and I couldn’t be happier with my choice.
The unit comes in a few pieces but assembles effortlessly. It’s incredibly lightweight, which made me skeptical about its effectiveness. However, after watching the instructional videos on the Bissell website, I found it easy to operate and clean afterward. I used Bissell Professional Pet Urine Eliminator + Oxy Carpet Cleaning Formula, which has a pleasant, subtle scent that doesn’t linger.
I focused on a problem area with urine stains and odors. I went over the worst spots twice and the edges just once. I even targeted some older stains to see if they would come up. After extracting all the water, I placed a box fan overnight to ensure it dried completely, given our humid climate. By morning, the carpet was entirely dry, looking and feeling almost brand new. It was fluffy and soft again, and there was absolutely no odor. My room feels revived!
This machine meets all our needs at a reasonable price, and the concentrated solution will last quite a while. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

After replacing all my carpets with laminate flooring, I donated my heavy-duty Rug Doctor. However, I still had an area rug in the living room and a few smaller rugs at the entrances. When it was time to clean the large rug, I didn’t want to invest in a full-size carpet cleaner just for that purpose.
I decided to try this Bissell unit, and after using it once, I’m quite impressed. It was simple to assemble and disassemble for cleaning, and it’s lightweight, making it easy to move between floors. The water shampoo tank is somewhat small, so I had to refill it once to thoroughly clean the rug since it had been a while since the last cleaning. On the plus side, the waste water tank is spacious enough to accommodate two full shampoo tank refills.
I found it convenient to empty the waste water tank between shampoo refills, which helped me gauge how clean the rug was after the initial cleaning cycle. I was pleasantly surprised to see that only a second cleaning cycle was needed to achieve a truly clean state. While this carpet cleaner is capable of handling larger areas, it’s really tailored for smaller spaces like area rugs.

Excellent product! I was amazed by the level of cleanliness it provides; the water that comes out of the carpets is black, and they look like new. Worth every penny, highly, highly, highly recommended!

I absolutely love this Bissell cleaner! It completely removed dog urine stains that were nearly a year old—gone! My high-traffic areas were filled with nasty dirty water. On the first use, it picked up so much dirt and pet hair. My carpet dried in about three hours, and I waited a day to ensure it was completely dry before cleaning a second time. The Bissell picked up even more dirty water that time! By the third use, my carpet looked fantastic—like new! The cleaner/solution tank is a bit small, but it’s manageable for me. The Bissell Pro Pet Formula is powerful and has a wonderful fresh scent. While the solution is a bit pricey, it’s definitely worth it. Assembly was a breeze—took about 10 minutes or so. I highly recommend it! 👌
(PS: I tried to upload pictures, but the app had an error. 🙃)

Review after first use on upholstery, area rugs, and carpet.
First up, upholstery. Attaching the upholstery hose was a breeze. I used it on a couch that had been soiled by our small dog. It not only cleaned the couch but also eliminated the odor and left a pleasant scent. I then tackled the rest of the upholstery in the house. Although the furniture isn’t old, it removed a surprising amount of dirt. The best part? It dried quickly—much faster than I expected.
Next, I moved on to the area rugs. They cleaned beautifully and dried quickly as well. I checked the underside of the rugs, and the backing remained dry; the cleaner only penetrated the fibers, regardless of whether the rug had no pile or a thick pile. They were dry in about an hour.
Finally, the carpet. It cleaned exceptionally well, dried rapidly, and pulled up a lot of dirt. If you have stains, be sure to pretreat, and you’ll be amazed at the results. For regular carpet cleaning, this machine is AMAZING! It performed even better than when I hired a professional, and the drying time was faster.
The picture is from one couch cleaning.

The majority of the world operates on 220v, but this product is 120v, and that crucial detail is not mentioned anywhere. Additionally, the socket design is incorrect.

Where has this been all my life? I’ve rented carpet cleaners before, but this one is in a league of its own. After reading some negative reviews and using the machine myself, I believe most complaints stem from user error.
Here are my thoughts, keeping in mind that everyone’s needs vary, so consider what you require when reading reviews.
As soon as I opened the box, I found it incredibly easy to assemble. If you’re familiar with the Bissell Little Green Portable Cleaner, you’ll have no trouble. Even if you’re not, it’s straightforward with just a few pieces to snap together.
I was aware that this machine has a smaller tank, but I can overlook that. The duration of the tank’s contents really depends on your usage and the condition of your carpet. I started with my area rug, which was quite dirty, requiring me to use two tanks for my 5×8 rug. The tank has clear water and formula lines, but you can use half the recommended amount of formula and still achieve great results.
Now, onto the upstairs. Since my entire second floor is carpeted, I took my two kids with me, bracing for what felt like it could be an Olympic event. I began in my daughter’s room (the master bedroom), which is fairly large, and used about 1.5 tanks there. I used one tank in the smaller bedroom and two tanks in the main area (which has a dog). I was genuinely impressed; I went over the main landing twice, with the water coming out black each time. We aren’t messy people, but this machine made me reconsider that!
A few points to note:
Would I recommend this? Absolutely! You can’t beat the value for what you get. It’s a definite yes from me.

This carpet is about 25 years old and has seen its fair share of wear with 5 kids running around on it. As shown in the pictures, it cleaned up really well. The carpet cleaner is lightweight and easy to use. However, the downside is that it only holds water and cleaning solution for 1 minute and 20 seconds if you keep the trigger pressed for shampooing. This means you’ll need to refill it frequently. The dirty water collection tank can be misleading; it has a low line just above the clamps that indicates when it needs to be drained. For smaller areas, it’s definitely worth the investment. For larger spaces, it works well, but expect to be emptying and refilling it quite often.
