I previously owned a battery booster that unexpectedly stopped working and couldn’t be recharged. With a replacement costing $300, I decided to explore other options and found the GOOLOO booster, which is available for less than a third of that price.
Upon receiving it, I was surprised by its small size and worried I might have fallen for a scam or purchased a subpar product. However, I was completely wrong.
Since buying it, I’ve had to use the booster several times, and each time it started my car even better than my relatively new battery does when fully charged. I’ve used it multiple times without needing to recharge it in between, proving that it doesn’t require a recharge after each use. I purchased the Gooloo unit 30 days ago and finally had the chance to test it today.
To give you some background, I’m a 74-year-old disabled, retired senior who uses a wheelchair. My income is limited to my monthly Social Security check, and I don’t have any savings. I live alone about 60 miles south of Albuquerque, NM, and I make one trip to Albuquerque each month, which is about a 140-mile round trip, including errands around town.
I drive very little, putting less than 1,500 miles on my car each year. I inherited my 2002 Pontiac Bonneville from my mother when she passed away in 2010. The original battery lasted 15 years, but since then, I’ve had ongoing issues with dead batteries. I’ve replaced it four times over the last seven years with NAPA-grade batteries—two were new at around $200 each, and two were replaced under warranty for about $80.
The battery is located under the rear seat, and due to my disabilities, replacing it is quite challenging for me. Over the past seven years, I’ve dealt with an intermittent battery drain that often leaves me with a dead battery six to eight times a year. I suspect a malfunctioning trunk light switch, but I haven’t pinpointed the exact cause. I removed the trunk bulb but still have the issue.

I have a variety of Makita battery-operated tools and have found that their batteries hold a charge exceptionally well, often reaching full charge in under five minutes, even after a long period of inactivity.
On the other hand, I’ve had poor experiences with Ryobi batteries, which don’t hold a charge well and seem to underperform compared to their rated capacity. I stopped buying Ryobi batteries after several disappointments. Similarly, when Milwaukee entered the market, I faced quality issues with their batteries initially, but over time, they improved significantly.
Now, regarding my car’s starting needs: starter motors typically draw several hundred amps to start an engine. For my six-cylinder car, the draw might be around 200 amps max. A typical start takes only a few seconds, so I calculated the draw to be about 0.1 AH. This means the Gooloo’s 8 AH should, in theory, provide around 80 starts, but realistically, I estimate about 40 starts at 50% charge, which is a reasonable claim.
So, how did my actual experience with the Gooloo play out today? My battery was completely dead—wouldn’t even unlock the doors. I decided to connect the Gooloo without accessing the rear seat battery. I used my usual method of connecting the Gooloo to the car’s alternator bolt and the positive terminal in the fuse box.
After connecting it, I followed the instructions and pressed the Boost Button after getting a blinking green light. My running lights lit up, which was encouraging. However, when I tried to start the car, I only got a brief blip from the starter, and the lights went out.
I checked my connections and found that the black lead wasn’t secure. After tightening it, the lights came back on, and this time, when I hit the starter, the engine roared to life! I was thrilled with the Gooloo’s performance.
Fast forward about ten days, and my battery was dead again. This time, the Gooloo couldn’t start it. I realized that my battery was much more depleted than before. I followed the same connection steps, but despite the green light cycling, the Gooloo wasn’t able to get the engine to turn over.
Remembering the instructions, I let the Gooloo sit connected for a while to transfer some charge. I noticed the green light cycling and felt confident it was working. After some time, the Gooloo still couldn’t start the car, but I saw that it had transferred some energy into the battery.
I plugged the Gooloo into a charger to recharge it. It took about five hours to reach full charge, which made me think it might not recognize fast-charging protocols.
In the end, I connected my regular car battery charger and successfully got the car started after charging it for a bit.
