Design and Build Quality
The BOSCH 1617EVSPK router is constructed with a combination of durable plastic and metal, ensuring longevity and resilience in various woodworking tasks. The aluminum construction contributes to its robustness, making it one of the most durable routers in its class. The design features rounded hardwood handles on the fixed base for maximum control and comfort, while the plunge base is equipped with a soft grip handle that minimizes vibration during use.
One notable feature is the integrated constant response circuitry, which maintains a consistent speed throughout the cut. This ensures cleaner results, particularly when working with different types of wood. Additionally, the router’s weight of 18.2 pounds provides stability and balance, making it easier to control during intricate routing tasks.
Performance and Versatility
This router kit is designed for a broad range of applications, including precise bit plunging, edge forming, slot cutting, laminate trimming, and dovetail cutting. The 12 Amp motor delivers ample power, allowing it to cut through hardwoods with ease while providing smooth operation on softer materials.
The variable speed motor, adjustable from 8,000 to 25,000 RPM, offers users the flexibility to set the optimal speed for different tasks, enabling better control over the routing process. The microfine bit-depth adjustment feature is particularly beneficial for users needing to achieve precise cuts, as it allows for incremental depth changes that can be fine-tuned easily.

While the router does have a dust collection port, some users have noted that it could be more effective, leading to a bit of a mess during more extensive routing tasks. This is a point to consider for those who prioritize a clean workspace.
Conclusion
The BOSCH 1617EVSPK Wood Router Tool Combo Kit is an exceptional choice for both DIY enthusiasts and professional woodworkers. This router is absolutely fantastic compared to my previous one. The depth control is incredibly easy to adjust, and its solid weight is definitely a plus. It’s well-balanced, resulting in almost no vibration during use. The plunge base is exceptional and performs flawlessly. The strong motor handles 1/2 bits with ease, and the included case is perfect for organization and travel. The price is unbeatable as well.
I also purchased the edge guide, which is sturdy and well-constructed. Bosch really hit the mark with this product, and its longevity on the market speaks volumes—just check out the other reviews if you don’t believe me. The precision depth control for the bit is meticulously designed, far surpassing the frustrating ring adjustments found on other routers; there’s really no comparison.
If you’re in the market for a powerful router that includes both a regular and a plunge base, this is the one to get. You’ll be thrilled with your choice. Plus, the price on Amazon is unbeatable, with delivery in just three days—all without leaving your home. What more can I say?

I’ve been waiting to share my thoughts on the 1617 router until I had a chance to use it more extensively, and it’s clear why this router has been a top choice in its class for so long. The build quality is impressive, both for the router and its bases. It features a soft start, variable speed, and accommodates both 1/4 and 1/2 collets, plus this kit includes a plunge base.
While it does produce some noise—like any router—it was less loud than I anticipated. I keep the fixed base in my router table for regular use and switch to the plunge base when routing outside the table. The plunge base performs well, offering multiple depth stops and very comfortable handles.
I chose this setup for my basement because I didn’t trust the MDF cabinets of other models to hold up. Leveling the base plate takes some time, but it comes with useful accessories like feather boards and jointing shims for edge jointing.
One major drawback is the dust collection; it’s quite messy since there’s no cabinet underneath, allowing dust to scatter everywhere. I expected this based on the design, so I also purchased a Milescraft router dust collector that attaches under the table, which helps mitigate the issue.
You’ll want to construct a table for this setup, as it’s too low for the ground and too high for a standard workbench. I built a simple table with casters to achieve the right height. Overall, while it costs more than budget options, this router is built to last and can handle nearly any routing task you throw at it.

I recently incorporated the Bosch router into my woodshop, and it has proven to be an outstanding tool. The construction is sturdy, providing a reassuring heft that inspires confidence, even with demanding tasks. The precision is remarkable—adjustments are effortless and intuitive, enabling detailed work and producing clean, professional-quality edges.
The power is more than adequate for hardwoods, and it easily glides through softer materials. I also value the ergonomic design; it feels comfortable to use during long sessions, with minimal vibration. The dust collection port is a thoughtful feature, helping to keep the work area cleaner than I anticipated.
In summary, this Bosch router is a dependable and well-constructed tool that consistently delivers precise, high-quality results. I highly recommend it for both DIY enthusiasts and experienced woodworkers.

The tool is outstanding; I feel fortunate because the quality is top-notch. However, I can’t help but notice the price—it was just three months ago that I bought it on Amazon, and today it’s double the cost. Other than that, I’m very happy with the product.

I’ve always appreciated Bosch tools for their quality. When we learned that we were going to be grandparents, I wanted to create something special for the kids’ nursery. Naturally, building a new cabinet/dresser called for a new tool, and since I’ve had my eye on this model for some time, it was finally time to make the purchase. Upon first use, I was blown away by how impressive this machine is. It has plenty of power to cut through oak, includes both 1/4″ and 1/2″ collets, a sturdy base, a plunge base, and a storage case for guides and a variety of router bits. What truly stood out to me was the micro-adjustment feature for depth, which can be adjusted not only from the top but also with a hex socket on the base when using it with the Bosch router table (which I also bought). This tool is exceptionally well-designed, and I highly recommend it.

I purchased this router, but since it’s 120v, I reached out to Bosch for assistance. Unfortunately, I was informed that this router cannot be used in the UK, and they do not provide a transformer because it operates at 60 Hz. I’m looking for help with this issue.

I’ve really enjoyed using this Bosch router so far. It received excellent recommendations from both online sources and friends who frequently use them. The build quality feels solid, and the adjustable speed feature is definitely a bonus. It’s a fantastic purchase that performs well, and I anticipate using it for many years to come.

I recently purchased the Bosch Benchtop Router Table RA1181 (imported version) and encountered some issues during installation. The holes didn’t align properly, and I could only use two of them, which meant I had to redrill holes in the base. If it weren’t for that hassle, I would have given it a full five stars. I’ve attached a picture of the compatible models for the RA1181. As for its performance, it’s excellent, but be aware that it weighs 9 kg, so some muscle is required to handle it.

What sets this router apart from others in my collection is the depth setting adjustment, as indicated on the left side of the first image. It offers a wide range with precise control over depth increments.
This feature has been particularly beneficial for my current project, which involves crafting speaker cabinet front panels from hard rock maple ply. Working with this material is significantly different from using cabinet-grade MDF, which is much softer. For deep routing, it’s essential to take multiple shallow passes and maintain a slow feed rate. This router makes that process straightforward and highly repeatable, especially when routing multiple pieces to the same specifications (as shown in the second image, where I’m routing cutouts for the inner front panel of a high-end speaker system).
Calibration for a consistent starting point is easy, leading to precise results across various operations.
While no router is perfect for every task, this Bosch model stands out for its robust construction, excellent torque, and speed control. The additional fixed base allows it to tackle a variety of jobs. However, it lacks a comprehensive dust collection system found in some DeWalt and Porter Cable 1/2″ shank routers I’ve used. The dust shields on those models can restrict plunge depth and cut depth, which is a limitation when working with thicker materials. In this project, I’m handling 1-1/4″ and 1-1/2″ maple ply, making cuts between 1″ and 1-1/4″, something that’s not feasible with routers that have dust collection features.
This necessity has led me to have multiple routers set up for specific tasks. Currently, I have three Bosch 1617EVS models—two with plunge bases and one with a fixed base.
Another valuable aspect of this Bosch router is the accessory template guide adapter and templates. I’ve included pictures of the base with the template guide and a short adapter for a 1/2″ solid carbide spiral up-cut bit, shown in both the “baseline” position and extended. One of my 1617EVS routers is permanently set up with this adapter.
The fixed base configuration is particularly useful for trimming functions using various follower bits, whether I’m setting the rebate for a high-frequency driver after drilling the original hole with a Forstner bit or trimming an edge flush with a 1/2″ shear trim bit. For certain jobs, this setup outperforms my 1/4″ shank trim routers.
