In this review, we will take an extensive look at its features, installation process, performance, and value for money.

Key Features

Video Quality and Night Vision

The Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Plus offers 1080p HD video quality, ensuring that homeowners can clearly see what’s happening around their property at any time. The Color Night Vision feature is particularly noteworthy, as it allows for clear visibility in low-light conditions. The camera’s wide field of view—140° horizontally and 80° vertically—provides comprehensive coverage, minimizing blind spots significantly.

Motion Detection Capabilities

One of the standout features of this device is its Advanced Motion Detection system, which includes customizable motion zones. Users can tailor these zones through the Ring app, ensuring that they receive notifications only for relevant activities. This customization helps to avoid unnecessary alerts caused by pets or passing vehicles, making the system more efficient and user-friendly.

Two-Way Audio and Siren

Equipped with two-way audio, the Floodlight Cam allows for real-time communication with visitors through the corresponding mobile app. The noise cancellation feature enhances this experience, ensuring clear sound quality. Additionally, the built-in 105dB siren can be activated remotely, providing an extra layer of security against potential intruders.

Lighting and Power

The device boasts two powerful 3000° Kelvin floodlights that emit a remarkable 2000 lumens of brightness, illuminating dark areas and enhancing security. The hardwired power connection (110-240V) eliminates concerns about battery life, ensuring that the device remains operational at all times.

Connectivity and Compatibility

With a minimum upload speed requirement of 2 Mbps, the Floodlight Cam seamlessly connects via 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi at 2.4GHz. For those who have other Ring devices or smart home systems, integration is straightforward, further enhancing the overall security ecosystem.

Installation Process

Average Installation Time

Installation of the Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Plus typically takes around 15-25 minutes for those who have basic DIY skills. It requires a 4-inch round weatherproof electrical box (not included), which is essential for a secure and weather-resistant setup.

Step-by-Step Overview

The installation process is fairly straightforward, involving:

  1. Choosing the Right Location: It’s vital to select a location that maximizes coverage while keeping the camera and floodlights unobstructed.
  2. Running Power: A hardwired connection means running an electrical line to the chosen location. This process requires careful measurements and may involve drilling through exterior walls.
  3. Mounting the Device: The integrated mounting base simplifies installation, allowing users to adjust the angles of both the camera and lights for optimal coverage.
  4. Connecting to Wi-Fi: Once installed, users can connect the device to their Wi-Fi network through the Ring app, making it ready for use.

Overall, users report that the installation is easy to follow, and the instructions are clear, which contributes to a hassle-free experience.

Performance and User Experience

Video and Audio Quality

Users have consistently praised the video quality of the Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Plus. Daytime footage is bright and clear, while the night vision feature effectively captures details in low light, allowing for peace of mind. The two-way audio is another highlight, allowing users to communicate effectively from their smartphones.

Customization and Control

The ability to customize motion detection zones and sensitivity through the Ring app is a significant advantage. This feature allows users to fine-tune their security settings according to their specific needs, ensuring that they only receive alerts for significant activities.

Brightness and Coverage

The floodlights are noted for their impressive brightness, which significantly enhances security during nighttime. The wide field of view ensures that large areas are covered, eliminating dark spots that could provide hiding places for intruders.

Value for Money

The Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Plus is competitively priced when considering its array of features. While some users express a desire for 4K video quality, the 1080p HD is still excellent for most home security needs.

Subscription Service

While the device offers many features out of the box, certain functionalities, such as video storage and advanced alerts, require a Ring Home subscription. This additional cost may be a consideration for potential buyers.

RING Flood Cam Wire Plus Review

I received my order ahead of schedule, and the customer support from RING has been outstanding, available 24/7. I opted for the wired version for its reliability and chose a white model to withstand the intense Phoenix sun.

I installed it vertically on the outside wall of my garage, approximately 8 feet above the driveway, aimed at my two-car driveway and the street. I ran a 3-wire round power cord from an AC outlet in the garage ceiling, about 15 feet to the wall. Measuring the mounting location precisely is crucial. I carefully planned where to drill through the exterior wall and stucco into the garage. For this, I bought a 12” x 3/8” concrete drill bit and a plastic 4” round box.

The hole needed some adjustment to accommodate the power cord more easily; a 7/16” or ½” bit would have worked better. After drilling through about 13” of stucco and wood, I cut off the plug and threaded it through to the outside. I mounted the plastic round box with long screws, stripped the cord, and wired it according to the instructions.

The next morning, I found that one of the two tabs on the plastic round box had broken, leaving the unit hanging by only the wire and the remaining tab. I strongly advise against using a plastic 4” round box. I switched to a metal 4” round box, rewired, and remounted the unit. Make sure to use appropriate screws for securing the round box to the wall.

The unit is quite heavy, supported only by two tabs on the round box. The metal box with ½” threaded outlets includes screw plugs for unused holes. The panhead screws provided for attaching the metal bracket to the box were too tall, preventing a complete seal with the foam rubber gasket. I replaced them with two truss-head screws. Handle the unit with care during installation due to its weight.

I sealed the round box to the stucco wall with liquid nails to prevent rain from infiltrating the power cord and the back of the unit, then painted the box and touched up the stucco.

Now, regarding functionality and performance: I’m disappointed with the image resolution when zooming in on a person. The camera lacks lenses, resulting in a very limited depth of field. The option to select the motion detection area is a nice feature. The app can be a bit confusing at first, but it becomes easier to use after some time. The selectable motion alarm is interesting, featuring a recorded female voice that says, “Hi, you are currently being recorded” when motion is detected.

Overall, this unit is worth the investment and installation time. It adds a valuable layer of security to my home and integrates well with my RING doorbell. I’ll have a better sense of its durability after a couple of summers and rainy seasons. I subscribed to the Plus option for $100/year, which provides video recording for all my home devices, and I appreciate receiving shared neighborhood alerts about security issues detected by RING products.

Customer Feedback to RING: I recommend updating your installation video to specify using only a Metal 4” Round Box and replacing the panhead screws with flatter ones. Additionally, improving the resolution for zoomed-in images is crucial for visual identification. I would be willing to pay extra for enhanced resolution in future product revisions.

The Ring Wired Floodlight Cam has truly surpassed my expectations! The setup process was simple, thanks to the clear instructions, and once it was installed, my home security took a significant leap forward. The video quality is exceptionally sharp, even at night, allowing me to see and hear everything happening around my property. The 1080p HD camera delivers clear footage both day and night, with night vision functioning impressively well.

The two-way audio feature is a standout; I can communicate with anyone at my door or on my property directly from my phone, which is perfect for deliveries or unexpected visitors. The motion detection is highly adjustable, enabling me to fine-tune the sensitivity and avoid unnecessary alerts from small animals or passing cars. I also appreciate that it’s hardwired, eliminating the hassle of charging batteries and ensuring consistent, reliable power.

The floodlights are brilliantly bright and illuminate a wide area, effectively deterring potential intruders and giving me peace of mind when returning home after dark. I also like that they automatically activate when motion is detected, making them both energy-efficient and convenient. With the Ring app, I can manage the lights, view live footage, and review recorded clips at any time, which is ideal for monitoring my home while I’m away.

In summary, the Ring Wired Floodlight Cam has greatly enhanced my sense of security and added significant value to my home.
