Seagate Expansion 20TB External Hard Drive HDD Review

In the world of digital storage, the Seagate Expansion 20TB External Hard Drive (model STKP20000400) stands out as an impressive offering that combines substantial storage capacity with user-friendly features. Designed specifically for those who require extensive space for their data—whether it’s videos, images, documents, or backups—this external hard drive is a versatile solution for both personal and professional needs.

Design and Build Quality

The Seagate Expansion 20TB drive is housed in a sleek, black casing that exudes a modern aesthetic. Measuring 6.93 x 1.44 x 4.75 inches and weighing in at 2.59 pounds, the device is compact enough to fit into any workspace without being cumbersome. This lightweight design also makes it incredibly portable, allowing users to easily transport it between home and office or while traveling. Despite its size, the drive feels sturdy and well-constructed, ensuring durability over the long term.

Setup and Usability

One of the major selling points of this external hard drive is its straightforward plug-and-play functionality. Users simply need to connect the power adapter and USB cable, and the drive is ready to go. Automatic recognition of Windows and Mac systems simplifies the setup process, although Mac users should note that reformatting is required for compatibility with Time Machine. This ease of use is particularly beneficial for those who may not be tech-savvy; even individuals who are not great with computers can effortlessly move files from their old systems to this drive.

Performance

Equipped with a USB 3.0 interface, the Seagate Expansion drive offers fast data transfer speeds, making it suitable for transferring large files efficiently. Some initial user experiences noted that the drive could be a touch slow during the first few uses, especially when backing up large amounts of data (like hundreds of gigabytes of videos and pictures). However, many report that after some usage, the speeds improve and become more reliable. The hard drive operates at a rotational speed of 7200 RPM, which contributes to its overall performance.

While most users find the drive operates smoothly, it is worth mentioning that some have expressed concern about noise levels. The drive is audible as it spins up and down, which may be unsettling for those unaccustomed to such sounds. Additionally, the absence of a power switch or a drive read/write light might be a drawback for some users who prefer more control over their devices.

Versatility and Compatibility

The Seagate Expansion drive is compatible with various operating systems including Windows, Linux, and Mac, providing flexibility for users with multiple devices. This cross-platform functionality makes it a solid choice for individuals who may work across different systems.

Data Recovery Services

A standout feature of this hard drive is the inclusion of Rescue Data Recovery Services. This added layer of security gives users peace of mind knowing that, should any unexpected data loss occur, professional recovery services are available for a limited time. This is especially valuable for those storing important or irreplaceable files.

User Experiences

User reviews reflect a largely positive consensus regarding the Seagate Expansion 20TB External Hard Drive. Many users appreciate the enormous storage capacity and the ease of setup, particularly for backing up large media collections. Feedback has highlighted the drive’s reliability during extensive data transfers, even though some users experienced long backup times initially.

A few users have noted that the documentation could be clearer, particularly regarding password setup and drive formatting options. However, most agree that the drive delivers on its promises and performs well for media storage and backups.

Conclusion

The Seagate Expansion 20TB External Hard Drive HDD (STKP20000400) is an excellent choice for anyone in need of substantial external storage. Its user-friendly design, fast data transfer capabilities, and robust features, including data recovery services, make it a worthwhile investment for both personal and professional use.

While there are minor concerns regarding noise levels and documentation clarity, the overall performance and reliability largely outweigh these issues. For those looking for an effective storage solution with ample capacity, this external hard drive earns a solid rating.

    Generic Cat Owner # 5682

I was expecting a standard-sized external hard drive, but this one is surprisingly compact—about the size of two thumb drives side by side! It’s incredibly tiny and adorable!

On a more serious note, it performs as expected. I wanted to add decals as part of a gift, but it was too small for that; I even compared it with a Seagate drive we have. I was a bit disappointed by its size, as I could only fit two decals—one on each side. However, the smaller size is likely a benefit, taking up less space while in use and making storage easier. I do wish there was an option for a full-sized version, but I can overlook that.

The documentation leaves much to be desired, but I managed to get it working in about an hour. Transferring 490 GB took quite a long time due to the slow USB speed, but both the mirror and backup functions seem to work effectively. My main issue was setting up the disk’s password. I did it without proper guidance, and now that it’s set, I can’t figure out how to disable it. If my computer fails, I might end up locked out of my backup, assuming I understand how this device operates. Once again, the explanations are disappointing.

This product is incredibly user-friendly. I purchased it for my father, who struggles with computers, and he effortlessly transferred files from his old computer to this hard drive. The 4TB capacity is far more than he’ll ever require, making it a great value for the price.

I’m using this drive as a backup for my media server, and I transferred a substantial amount of data onto it during the first weekend. It performed perfectly without any issues. Since then, I’ve used it lightly, but it gives me peace of mind, especially after my RAID 0 drive enclosure failed a few months ago. Although I managed to recover the drives, I realized I needed an extra layer of backup.

Meets expectations, but it is not formatted to NTFS or APFS.

    Met my expectations.

I appreciate the price and capacity. Initially, it was a bit slow, but once everything settled in, the speeds improved and are now acceptable.

For the price, this 2TB hard drive is hard to beat. It’s efficient, stylish, and compact, making it convenient to use and store. Backing up nearly 1TB of videos, pictures, and more took a few hours, but that was to be expected. Occasionally, videos take a little longer to buffer, but they play perfectly, so the wait is worth it.

  9. Rated 4 out of 5

Pros: Impressive storage capacity. Connects and works immediately with a Windows 11 computer.

Cons: Not particularly quiet. As power-saving mechanisms activate, you can hear the drive spin up and down, which is a bit disconcerting since you can clearly hear the platters coming to a halt. I’ve never encountered a drive that makes this kind of noise before.

Negatives: Lacks a power switch and a drive activity indicator light. The eSATA connection and cable are frustrating; I would have preferred a standard USB-C option. Additionally, this drive isn’t very fast.

    To be determined: Reliability.
