With its robust design and exceptional sound quality, it is no surprise that this microphone has earned its status as the go-to choice for vocalists, podcasters, and recording artists alike. Let’s delve into the features, performance, and overall value of the SM58.

Design and Build Quality

Sturdy Construction

One of the most striking features of the Shure SM58 is its durability. Weighing 310 grams (10.9 ounces) and constructed from high-quality metal, this microphone can withstand the rigors of live performances and the wear and tear of touring. Users have praised its robust build, stating that it feels solid and can handle being dropped or knocked without compromising performance. The break-resistant stand adapter further enhances its reliability, making it a trusted companion for musicians on the road.

Dimensions and Ergonomics

The SM58 measures 10.31 x 4.92 x 3.31 inches, which makes it a comfortable handheld microphone. It fits well in the hand, allowing performers to deliver their best without worrying about grip issues. The microphone’s design also ensures that it can be easily mounted onto a stand or used with a handheld transmitter for wireless applications.

Sound Performance

Exceptional Vocal Quality

The SM58 is renowned for its tailored frequency response, which emphasizes the midrange frequencies that are crucial for clear vocal reproduction. With a frequency range of 50 Hz to 15 kHz and a frequency response of 50-15,000 Hz, it captures vocals with impressive clarity and warmth. Many users have reported that it brings out the best in their voices, making it ideal for live performances and studio recordings alike.

Cardioid Polar Pattern

The cardioid polar pattern of the SM58 helps to isolate the sound source while rejecting unwanted noise from the sides and rear. This feature is particularly beneficial in untreated environments, such as a home studio or during live performances where background noise can be problematic. Users have noted that the microphone effectively minimizes feedback and captures vocals without interference.

Noise Handling

Equipped with a spherical mesh grille and a built-in pop filter, the SM58 excels at reducing plosive sounds and unwanted background noise. This ensures that recordings and live performances maintain a clean sound, free from distractions. Many users have switched from condenser microphones to the SM58 specifically for its ability to handle background noise, making it a versatile choice for various applications.

Versatility

Ideal for Multiple Settings

While the SM58 is famously known as a live performance microphone, it is equally adept in studio settings. Its ability to isolate vocals from instruments makes it a valuable tool for recording engineers. Users have reported successful results in various scenarios, from recording vocals to capturing instruments, confirming its versatility across different audio applications.

Podcasting and Voice Calls

In recent years, the SM58 has gained popularity among podcasters and professionals engaged in remote meetings. Its dynamic nature and focused pickup pattern reduce background noise, allowing for clearer communication. Users transitioning from condenser microphones have found the SM58 to be a game-changer, eliminating issues with unwanted sounds during calls and recordings.

The quality is immediately apparent right from the packaging. Now I understand why Shure is considered one of the best! It has an excellent weight, a great feel, and most importantly, it fulfills its primary function perfectly!

The SM, or Studio Microphone, is often miscategorized as just a live performance mic, but it truly shines in studio settings as well. It’s designed for studio use and is durable enough to withstand the rigors of touring and frequent events.

As a cardioid dynamic mic, it’s perfect for less-than-ideal acoustic environments—like a bedroom without soundproofing. It effectively reduces unwanted echoes that condenser mics might pick up, making it excellent for recording vocals and for talk shows. While it may not eliminate all background noise, it significantly minimizes it, allowing you to mix or gate the sound without compromising your primary recording.

I suggest pairing it with a Focusrite audio interface, but any XLR-compatible interface that connects to a PC will work. Every home musician or podcaster should have one of these. The main difference between this mic and its larger counterpart, commonly seen on shows, is simply a larger windscreen; otherwise, they are identical internally.

Having worked in a college recording studio, I appreciate the value of condenser mics, but they can be problematic in the wrong setting. You don’t want to capture your roommate’s phone conversation while recording. This mic allows you to achieve professional-sounding mixes at home, providing more than enough quality for your recordings.

As mentioned, this is the best budget microphone for professional use. It delivers great sound quality and is very durable. Highly recommended!

As a hobbyist singer with seven years of experience, I’ve become quite familiar with how my voice should sound. I also spend a significant amount of time in meetings and calls, making a good microphone essential for my work.

Previously, I used a Yeti Snowball for years, but I decided to switch to the SM58 due to background noise issues during voice calls—even with noise gates and sound removers. I found that condenser microphones are generally very sensitive to sound. The SM58, being a popular dynamic microphone, has a more focused pickup pattern, requiring you to speak directly into it, which effectively resolved my background noise problems in meetings. The build quality is impressive, and I expect it to last for many years.

Keep in mind that this is a DYNAMIC microphone. While it excels at filtering background noise, it also tends to sacrifice some vocal detail. Compared to my old condenser mics, the tones aren’t as clear, particularly with my highest and lowest notes, as dynamic microphones cut off certain frequencies. This trade-off is necessary for the sound isolation it provides. If vocal clarity is crucial for your recording projects, I recommend opting for a condenser microphone, such as the RODE NT1 or NT1A for a brighter sound. I recently acquired the NT1, and the warmth and depth it captures in my voice is wonderful. Just remember to record in a soundproofed space—I typically use a closet. For live singing, however, a dynamic microphone is the way to go. Although you can still record songs with the SM58, I personally found my vocals sounded muddy, so I reserve it for meetings, calls, and live karaoke.

Please note that this microphone is not USB and requires an interface for setup. If you later invest in another XLR microphone, you can continue using the same interface. Many beginners go for the Scarlett, but I chose the Steinberg UR12 (the Scarlett was sold out), and I think it works wonderfully. Additionally, because the SM58 is a dynamic microphone, it operates quietly, so you will need a cloud lifter or some type of amp to boost your voice, as the interface gain alone isn’t sufficient.

    TL;DR

    • Very solid microphone.
    • Great for everyday use, meetings, calls, and live performances.
    • Adequate for vocal recordings, but condensers are better.
    • Requires an interface and preamp.

I was impressed with the sound quality of this mic, even when used with a budget mixer. It captured my vocals beautifully and picked up my drums effectively. It’s truly plug-and-play. Just a heads up, it doesn’t come with a cord, as mentioned. The sensitivity is spot on, responding excellently to my voice. The mic clip is a bit snug and requires some effort to adjust, but overall, it works fantastic!

The microphone is excellent, well-known for its build quality, sound performance, and durability. However, it would be even better if it came with a 1/4 inch adapter.
