Excellent craftsmanship and extremely comfortable.

I purchased these boots primarily because of the price and needed them quickly for a trip to Utah. As a size 14, it’s challenging to find a suitable pair at local stores. I wore them extensively around Salt Lake City, even tackling some climbing on Antelope Island with its rugged rocks and trails in temperatures ranging from 35 to 45 degrees. These boots are fantastic—extremely comfortable, very stable, and they provide excellent grip. Plus, they look nice enough for a dinner out. Overall, they are well-made and well-priced, far exceeding my expectations for the cost.

I absolutely love these boots! I ordered the classic black captain boots, and they look fantastic. The craftsmanship is top-notch, and they might just be the most comfortable boots I’ve ever owned. However, I do find the toe box a bit cramped, which leaves my pinky toe aching by the end of the workday. I followed their sizing guidelines and went half a size down, so perhaps ordering my usual size would have been a better choice. I’ve worn them for three weeks now, so I feel ready to share an honest review. I’ll definitely keep them and take good care of them, but I may not enjoy them as much as I had hoped.
Edit: I recently purchased a second pair of the captain boots in Arizona Adobe, and they are absolutely stunning! I also got lucky and found a pair made with their second last, which has a wider toe box. They feel amazing, and now I understand why others give them a 5-star rating. Just a heads-up: they’ve discontinued the last used for these, so don’t expect future pairs to have the wider toe box.
In the attached picture, you can see the noticeable difference in the narrowness of the toe box and the overall shape of the boot. I’m not sure if my original black pair was made on the old last or the newest one, which is supposed to be a compromise between the very narrow original toe box and the wider second last. If you order directly from the website, you should get the latest shoe shape.

This was my second experience with Thursday boots. My first pair was the Dukes, which were made on the old RT3 last. This time, I tried the Captains, crafted on the new Kingmaker last, which features a rounder shape. Unfortunately, I encountered a similar issue with pressure on the tops of my toes, even though I ordered a different boot in a different size and on a different last. However, I must commend the exceptional quality and craftsmanship of this product.
The workmanship of the Captains is impressive. I ordered them in Arizona Adobe, and the leather is stunning—thick and durable. I agree with recent reviewers that the color leans more towards chocolate brown than the burnt orange shown in the pictures. Some have speculated that a certain batch of Arizona Adobe leather came in darker this time, and it may take a while for this discrepancy to be resolved in the product line. If you’re seeking something closer to the burnt orange shown, consider choosing a different color or waiting for more feedback from others or the company itself regarding a batch that matches the advertised color. Personally, I actually preferred the chocolate brown, but your experience may differ.
In terms of construction, these boots are built to withstand years of wear. The studded sole is robust, and the leather is impressively scuff-resistant. The laces are strong and durable, and the welt is clean, with no stray stitches noticeable on the boot. The rubber studded sole is also of high quality and aesthetically pleasing. However, I found the quarters to be a bit flimsy; I was expecting something more akin to cowboy boot quarters, which often use firmer leather or plastic reinforcement. Instead, they felt more like dress shoe quarters. Given that the heel in a boot doesn’t flex much compared to the instep and forefoot, the need for overly tough heel quarters might not be necessary, but it felt odd considering the sturdiness of the rest of the boot. Overall, the craftsmanship is outstanding and offers excellent value based on quality alone.
The issue, which ultimately led to my return, is that the shape and design of the last just don’t fit my feet. I usually wear a 10.5E on a Brannock device but fit into a 10D in most shoes and cowboy boots, with a few exceptions. I followed Thursday’s suggestion to size down by half and ordered a 10D. This size fit well in most areas, perhaps even a bit wide in the midfoot, and the heel felt comfortably snug despite my concerns about the quarters. The problem arose with the toe box, where I experienced constant pressure on the tops of my toes. I’ve had issues with ingrown toenails in the past, and after a few days of wear, my toes began to hurt, making me worry that my ingrown nail problems would resurface. While I may have larger big toes than average, this issue doesn’t arise with other shoes of similar sizes, including several pairs of Dan Post and Capitan cowboy boots with R and cutter toes, respectively. Sizing up half a size leads to my foot swimming in the boots, making them far too large. A half size down or a wide size wouldn’t resolve the issue of a toe box that’s not tall enough.
Ultimately, I believe the shape of the last simply doesn’t accommodate my feet. Each bootmaker has different lasts around which they design their shoes, and I imagine creating lasts is quite challenging. Given the numerous five-star reviews, it’s clear that Thursday has produced an outstanding product that fits many people well. I just wish it had worked for me.
I suspect I might have better luck with their heavier-duty models that feature lug soles and puff toes, but I find lug soles to be unsuited to my style. Unfortunately, it seems that I might just be out of luck with Thursday boots. I really wanted to love these, but ultimately, I had to return them.

UK sizing information – For reference, I typically wear a UK size 10 in Adidas trainers. For the Captains boots in Tobacco from Stormking, I ordered a 9.5UK through the Amazon listing, and they fit perfectly. Just a heads up: when you order a 9.5UK, you’ll receive a 10US.
Comfortable and stylish – The boots feel high-quality and look great. I’ve worn them a few times without any issues, so I can’t comment on their durability just yet.
I had a fantastic experience with Thursday Boots’ customer service; they were incredibly helpful and addressed all my inquiries.

I ordered a size 8 UK based on the advice to choose half a size smaller for boots compared to my sneaker size of 8.5 UK. While the box correctly indicates 8 UK, the actual size of the boots corresponds to a 9 US, not 8.5. This makes the sizing chart misleading, or perhaps it was an error on their part. Nonetheless, the boots are of excellent quality and have a great overall appearance.

I absolutely love these boots! The quality is amazing, and I received them the next day. They’re incredibly comfortable, and I now have three pairs of Thursday footwear. I recommend ordering half a size down from your usual UK size. I’m a size ten, and I ordered a ten, but I have to wear thick socks for the boots to fit well. I also noticed that the sizing varies slightly between styles; my black cap toes are looser than my tan pair. Additionally, I bought a pair of their leather high tops in half a size smaller than my usual size, and they fit perfectly with thin socks.

I’m really impressed with the quality of these heritage service boots, especially given the price. While I’m not using them as “work boots,” they are perfect for casual wear. The Captains come packed with features for what you pay. There are many YouTube videos detailing the construction and quality of these Thursday boots, so I’ll leave that to others. I found the leather quality and color options to be excellent. I ultimately chose Burnt Copper over Arizona Adobe, and I’m excited to see how this color develops character over time. They looked fantastic right out of the box (the picture shows them after one week of wear). I’m glad I ordered a half size down from my running shoes, as the fit is spot on. The break-in period is going smoothly; I’ve been wearing them with thick socks for a snug fit and using cedar shoe trees when they’re not on my feet. I’ve been incorporating them into my dog walking routine, covering about 2.5 miles on sidewalks. I recommend gradually increasing wear time to allow the materials to break in and conform to your feet. Initially, there was a bit of squeaking as the leather settled, but that has faded after a few outings. I’m looking forward to wearing these boots on my European vacation later this year. They can easily elevate a casual outfit, and I expect them to become my go-to comfortable “urban” boots. At $200, it’s a fantastic deal—comparable options are priced much higher. The quality-to-price ratio is outstanding and hits the sweet spot for me.
