Hello! I’ve recently transitioned from using a second-hand Arturia Essential 61 keyboard, and I’d like to share my thoughts based on my experience so far.
The M-Audio keyboard definitely outshines the Arturia in several ways. It features aftertouch, semi-weighted keys, and feels sturdier in its construction. The Arturia, in comparison, feels more like a toy.
I haven’t bothered using the included software; I might check it out eventually, but I don’t see it as a significant bonus, especially since they seem to be stripped-down versions. They might be useful for beginners, though.
A downside for me is that I was used to the Arturia keyboard, so now I have to adapt to a new setup. Time will tell how that goes.
Arturia has a software called MIDI Center for managing its keyboard parameters, which is a plus. I haven’t explored the corresponding options for the M-Audio yet.
As for DAWs, I use Ableton, and both keyboards appear to work well with it. There’s a lot to experiment with and adjust, as you know, diving into this world is quite an adventure.

Attention MAC SONOMA USERS! Be aware that installing the software may pose challenges since it hasn’t been updated for compatibility with MAC OS Sonoma, according to their support site. I use it as a standalone MIDI controller, and here’s my perspective on that.
It functions perfectly on its own, without the need for a computer! The action is decent, allowing for full standalone operation without programming or performance dependency on a computer. It features zone aftertouch, 4 MIDI zones, and presets including program change commands, making it quite versatile. While it’s not flawless and has some quirks, it far surpasses the Novation controller I bought a few months ago. The presets take a few seconds to load, and the pads require a latch/color latch, as they don’t remain lit when sending program changes. Some common controllers can be a bit cumbersome to handle (like pitch and mod wheels). I would have rated it 4.5 stars if that were an option. As a secondary board in a complex setup, it integrates well with everything. Considering the price of $300, you can’t expect miracles, but this controller performs adequately and is the only one I found that meets my needs for controlling multiple synth modules in live performances. As someone who is a bit picky with keyboards, I’m satisfied with its performance.

The keys are fantastic, and the sliders and controllers have a satisfying weight, giving the entire unit a robust feel. I didn’t expect to encounter anything remotely close to that quality in a $400 CAD package. While I’m not claiming that the M-Audio Oxygen Pro 61 – 61 Key USB MIDI Keyboard Controller matches the feel of the $3,000 Yamaha Montage 6, it comes surprisingly close. It certainly doesn’t feel cheap or flimsy like many other keyboards in the sub-$500 range.
For beginners, it’s important to note that this is NOT a standalone piano or keyboard with built-in sounds. If you have a Mac, simply connect it to an open port, launch GarageBand, and you’re ready to go. You can play classic piano or organ sounds with this controller, or as the name suggests, control sounds and instruments in GarageBand (and other audio programs) using its keys or pads.
I mainly use Logic Pro, and this controller integrates seamlessly with it. Everything sounds and feels fantastic. Overall, I’m extremely satisfied with this controller for home studio or even semi-pro use. The layout is user-friendly, and it features standard piano key spacing. The build quality is solid, and there’s not much of a learning curve.
